Makeup, 1930 by Torii Kotondo (1900 - 1976)

Original Torii Kotondo (1900 - 1976) Japanese Woodblock Print
Makeup, 1930

Comments - Lovely shin-hanga portrait of a beauty at her toilette, arranging her hair as she looks into a mirror atop a makeup chest, her cheeks softly shaded in pink. The sleeves of her pink plum blossom print kimono have been pushed down to her waist, revealing a glimpse of her red under robe, and she kneels on a violet tie-dyed cushion with large flowers. Beautifully drawn with graceful, delicate line work, enhanced by a shimmering silver mica background. A second edition of this design was produced with a red-orange kimono. A timeless design by Torii Kotondo, who is considered one of the greatest masters of the shin-hanga beauty print.

Signed - Kotondo, with red "shi" artist's seal
Publisher - Kawaguchi, later edition from the original blocks

Artist - Torii Kotondo (1900 - 1976)
