Kabuki Actor as a Samurai, 1854 by Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Original Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861) Japanese Woodblock Print
Kabuki Actor as a Samurai, 1854

Comments - Terrific kabuki portrait of an actor as a samurai, looking up with a tight-lipped frown, his hand clenched into a fist. The portrait appears in a circular inset atop a black folding fan decorated with red bands. An elegant sword case can be seen at upper left. A bold, dramatic image in an unusual horizontal format, beautifully detailed with extensive burnishing on the fan and the sword scabbard. We've never come across this subject before.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 9 1/2" x 13 3/4"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Slight paper remnants on reverse at corners from previous mounting. A few small wormholes, repaired. Slight soiling, a few creases and small spots. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
