Comments - Terrific scene from "The Taiheiki" of the famous samurai Minamoto no Yoshiie accepting the surrender of his enemy Abe no Muneto after years of battling the Abe Clan. This fantastic triptych shows Yoshiie seated on a folding stool in a large encampment, surrounded by his retainers, who are armed with spears and ready for battle. He wears an imposing battle helmet topped with a dragon and flames, and his robe is covered with the paulownia mon or crest of the Minamoto family. At far left, Abe no Muneto kneels under the watchful eye of several fierce warriors. An enormous wooden drum hangs from a stand made of tree trunks in the center. Colorful battle flags and personal standards form a lively backdrop for the scene. Minamoto no Yoshiie was one of the most highly respected warriors of his time and has come to embody the spirit of the samurai. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. An incredible early image from Yoshitoshi's career, with fine detail and beautiful color. A great subject for a samurai enthusiast.
