Comments - Fantastic kabuki triptych that also serves as an advertisement for a type of bitter rice wine, with a label prominently displayed in the center and a list of dealers at lower right where the rice wine was sold. The scene includes portrait insets of several rivals meeting together at the Oiso Baths, the figures set against a curtain with a softly shaded plaid pattern across the top. At right, a man frowns sternly over his shoulder as he holds a small blue and white cup of sake, his short hair combed sleekly back. At bottom left, a fellow grimaces unhappily as he holds a folding fan, wearing a burnished black coat over a striped kimono. A beauty looks down at him from center right with a sweet smile, a roll of tissues tucked into her green brocade obi. A terrific design and a wonderful example of Meiji era advertising, beautifully colored and detailed. We've never come across this subject before, so if it appeals to you, bid now!
